Portland—the most volunteer-supported parks in America!
Volunteering in Portland’s Parks and Natural Areas
On an annual basis, we believe Portland's parks to be the most volunteer-supported in America.* Roughly 500,000 hours are given annually, at a value of $10+ million—equal to 20% of the parks workforce. PPF champions volunteering because it improves parks, builds community, saves limited funds, and engages citizens directly in protecting Portland’s greatest legacy.
*We researched several cities to compare—including New York, Seattle, Minneapolis—and found none came close to Portland's 20% volunteer workforce. Our city has been ranked second in its rate of volunteering nationwide (See link here).
Portland Parks & Recreation has an expert team of volunteer coordinators organizing volunteer opportunities, ranging from natural areas to community centers.
Over 100 organizations partner with PP&R for park stewardship and other activities. A list of these groups will be provided soon!

“Parke Diem!” is a citywide initiative to celebrate parks—joining together to help the parks we love, raise awareness of unmet needs, and to have fun! If you’re interested in volunteering or hosting a Parke Diem event, click on a link to see how you can join this history-making event.
